Do you walk as far as you think?

Regular exercise can reduce your risk of major illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer by up to 50%.

However are you as active as you think you are? The average person in the UK takes between 3,000 and 4,000 steps per day, but should really aim for 10,000 steps per day to achieve the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week (source: www.nhs.uk).

For the current public engagement exhibition we are attempting to recreate one of our early public engagement projects in which a group of 9 year olds recorded their steps for a week to test out a set of hypotheses about walking.

Help us find out how active staff and students are at the School. Let's see if women walk more than men, or if social scientists are more active than lab scientists!

Instructions:

  1. Download any free pedometer app on your phone or use a pedometer you already own.
  2. Make a note of your step count at the end of each day for seven days
  3. Enter your step count for each day via this survey link: https://lshtm.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/lshtm-walking

Let’s find out how active we really are!

All data collected will be anonymised.
