Breaking out: egress of the malaria parasite from its host red blood cell

Clinical malaria requires replication of asexual blood stage malaria parasites, characterised by successive cycles of intraerythrocytic replication, active egress of merozoites with associated host cell destruction, and invasion of fresh red cells.

This talk will summarise recent exciting insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying egress, including the identification of a parasite enzyme cascade that mediates disruption of the host red blood cell membrane.
