This unique online short course is designed to equip nurses and allied health professionals with the foundational knowledge and principles related to the nursing role in infection prevention and control within the context of low resources or austere environments.  

The course will provide students with the opportunity to examine how core Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) principles and practices can be effectively applied across a range of community and healthcare settings.

    • Prevalence, determinants, and transmission pathways
  • Public Health Perspectives
    • Antimicrobial resistance and stewardship
    • Behavioural change strategies
    • Stakeholder engagement and education
    • Vector control
    • Water, sanitation and health
  • Healthcare-Specific IPC Considerations
    • Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs)
    • Water, sanitation, and health in healthcare facilities(WASH)
    • Sterilization and disinfection
    • Waste management
    • Hand hygiene and personal protective equipment (PPE)
    • Outbreak control

Who should apply?

This course is suitable for nurses and midwives (including final year students of nursing or midwifery), paramedics or other allied healthcare professionals who are working or aspiring to work in low resource settings and with an interest in infection control.  There is no recommendation for a period of post-registration experience. This short course may also serve as a useful update for alumni of the Professional Diploma in Tropical Nursing.

How will you learn?

This is a two-day course, delivered online over two consecutive Wednesdays. Learners will attend live lectures alongside students on the Professional Diploma in Tropical Nursing in the morning, and undertake group and individual, asynchronous learning in the afternoon.

You will get the most benefit from engaging with live lectures, which are scheduled in the morning, London time, as well as being recorded and accessible afterwards on our e-learning platform, Moodle. We encourage all students to attend both days of live lectures to be able to interact with the academic exercises, and other students, ask questions and get immediate answers. Students from many different time zones across the world join our live online lectures to benefit from the enhanced learning experience.

Computer requirements

Students will require regular access to a computer with an internet connection, speakers and a microphone to access the LSHTM’s online learning site where many of the programme’s study resources are located.

Internet connection and web access are essential. If you can stream videos, your connection and device should be sufficient. The main applications used during the programme are LSHTM’s online learning platform Moodle, Collaborate, Zoom, and videos.

It is recommended that users run the latest version of Google Chrome.

Assessment

There is no formal assessment for the short course and no need to travel to the school for any part of the course.
