This seminar hosted by the Malaria Centre will highlight some of the threats and challenges that the malaria community face with regard to controlling and eventually eliminating malaria.
Great strides have been made in reducing global malaria transmission over the past 30 years but it remains one of the world’s most devastating diseases- with the burden particularly high in sub-Saharan Africa. Whilst news of a WHO-recommended malaria vaccine was well received in 2022, the vaccine seems unlikely to be a silver bullet for malaria elimination and other threats to malaria control are becoming particularly concerning. In particular, drugs and insecticides which are used for treatment and prevention of malaria are now less effective due to the presence of resistance in the parasites and the mosquitoes.
