MSc EpidemiologyContact Ryan Leung
I’m a third year Medical Student at the University of Hong Kong. During my first two pre-clinical years at HKU, I realized that whilst I enjoyed learning about the pathophysiology of different diseases, I was most interested about the “bigger picture” of the disease (i.e. the prevalence of it, the different risk factors, preventative measures), which brought me to studying Epidemiology at LSHTM. I’ve had summer internships at various hospitals where I worked on data collection and analysis, and it’s something I find I particularly enjoy doing.
Research interests or career goals
Not sure yet, but mathematical modelling of infectious diseases seem interesting! Apart from being a Student Ambassador, I’ve also volunteered myself to be Centre for the Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases Student Liaison Officer!
Why I chose LSHTM/my programme
Honestly, probably just going with the flow – many students from HKU are also intercalating here at LSHTM. (Interesting fact: LSHTM was founded by Patrick Manson, who also founded our medical school at HKU!) I chose to study MSc Epidemiology because it fits well with my interests, and given that I have a strong background in maths and statistics, seems the perfect fit.
Ever since I’ve started here, I’ve loved every single minute of it – the timetable here is extremely well organized, where you have lectures usually followed by a Q&A session and a practical. Many professors here have also been involved in dealing with the COVID pandemic, and it’s wonderful to hear what they say about it – some of them have been quite frank and you are able to hear things which aren’t always heard from the news! Moreover, interacting with students from diverse backgrounds mean you learn to see things from a completely different perspective!
