MSc Demography & HealthContact Laura Gimeno
Before coming to LSHTM, I completed an undergraduate in Human, Social and Political Sciences and a research MPhil in Biological Anthropological Science at the University of Cambridge. This was where I discovered my interest in health and disease in modern human populations, and in how the social and environmental contexts we live in can influence our health over the course of our lifetimes!
Research interests or career goals
I am considering continuing in research after my MSc. In particular, I am interested in how neighbourhood socioeconomic contexts interact with individual-level characteristics to generate geographic inequalities in non-communicable disease risk. I’m also interested in how longitudinal data can be used to disentangle the impact that social, economic and demographic change at the macro-level have on individual-level health outcomes.
Why I chose LSHTM/my programme
I chose Demography & Health at LSHTM because of the rigorous methodological training it provides, both in demography and epidemiology. I really wanted to improve my quantitative skills and become familiar with working with the large datasets that are common in population studies, and I’m very excited for my summer project as an opportunity to get hands on. Although my current aim is to apply these skills to academic research, I am confident that these skills will help me no matter what career path I end up on!
