MSc Public Health – General streamContact Darshnika Lakhoo
I completed my medical degree at the University of Cape Town in 2015. For the next 3 years, while working as a clinician, I developed a passion for infectious diseases and had the opportunity to work intimately with HIV and TB infected patients. During this time, I often felt frustrated with the overburdened and under-resourced healthcare system. This forced me to challenge my views around healthcare and how to make a meaningful impact – which led to the MSc Public Health.
Research interests or career goals
I intend to join an organisation that focuses on HIV and TB related research. Working as a research analyst, I will be able to evaluate and monitor the spread of disease and use this to develop innovative solutions. With more experience, I would ultimately seek to join an organisation and broaden my research interests into the impact of climate change on infectious diseases.
Why I chose LSHTM/my course
LSHTM is one of the most globally-recognised universities for Public Health; teaching and mentorship is provided by highly-qualified, approachable, respected and cited professors. I am particularly captivated by the strong emphasis on research at LSHTM, with so many global collaborative partnerships. Lastly, I’m most excited about the growth, learning and networking potential that comes with interacting with the diverse student population that this programme boasts.
