Arriving in the UK

The UK Government has introduced a traffic light system of rules for entering the UK.

What you must do before you travel and when you arrive in England from abroad depends on where you have been in the 10 days before you travel. Check the government advice about entering the UK.

Countries are rated as red, amber or green for COVID-19. Each list includes rules you must follow to enter England. Find out which list your country is on.

  • Red list: High-risk countries
  • Amber list: Moderate-risk countries
  • Green list: Low-risk countries

Please note that the countries on the lists and the rules can change, so make sure to refer to the lists on the UK Government website frequently for the most up to date information.

Please also note that current UK Government rules state that people do not need to have received a COVID-19 vaccine to enter the UK, however the rules must be followed even if you have been vaccinated.

Red list countries and territories

If you have been in a country or territory on the red list in the last 10 days you will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish National, or you have residence rights in the UK. If you have a Student visa or have pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, then you have residency rights in the UK.

Before you travel to England, you must:

On arrival in England, you must:

Quarantine in a managed hotel and take COVID-19 tests. If you arrive from a red list country, you will need to purchase a hotel quarantine package at a cost of £1,750 which includes the 10 days' accommodation and the two COVID-19 tests. The day of arrival in England will be treated as day 0. You will be met by a member of the hotel quarantine team who will guide you to the hotel. Managed quarantine: what to expect.

Green list countries and territories

What you must do if you have been in a green country or territory in the 10 days before you arrive in England.

On arrival in England:

  • You must take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 after you arrive
  • You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive
  • You must self-isolate if NHS Test & Trace informs you that you travelled to England with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19

Please visit Government website to see which countries are on the green list.

Transit stops in amber or red list countries

When you arrive in England, the rules apply for the highest risk country or territory that you have been in or passed through in the previous 10 days. This includes transit stops.

A transit stop is a stop where passengers can get on or off the same part of the transport in which you are travelling. It can apply to ships, trains or flights. Your ticket should show if a stop is a transit stop.

The rules of a country or territory that you make a transit stop in could apply if:

  • new passengers get on and are able to mix with you
  • you or other passengers get off the transport you are on and mix with other people, then get on again.

Please visit Making a transit stop for further details.
