Summary

Work under the Mental Health section has two broad aims. Firstly, we are undertaking studies to inform survival and quality of life in particular the mental wellbeing of people living with HIV. Secondly, we are undertaking studies to contribute to a better understanding of the evolving burden of non-communicable diseases in the country with a focus on mental illness. To address these aims we are undertaking four scientific projects in collaboration with partners in Africa, Europe and USA.

Specific focus areas

In the area of informing the survival and quality of life of people living with HIV we are undertaking the following studies: i) integrating the management of depression into routine HIV care in Uganda (the HIV+D trial); ii) integrating mental health into HIV care services for HIV infected Children and Adolescents in Kampala and Masaka, Uganda: Formative work (CHAKA+ study); iii) The HIV clinical trials preparedness studies among patients with Severe Mental ILlnEss in HIV endemic Uganda (the SMILE study). In the area of studies to better understand the evolving burden of mental illness, we are undertaking the study, iv) investigating the GENetic risk associated with externalising disorders among youth attending the CHAKA Study (GenCHAKA Study).
