Adopt a book

Help preserve the history of public health and global disease by adopting a book from the Library's historical collections.

Funds will be used to preserve and conserve the Library's historical collections which outline the history of tropical medicine and public health. The collections contain many volumes from the Victorian age of exploration and sanitary improvements, as well as earlier writings on disease from throughout the UK and overseas. Adopting a book from the School's collections is a great way to mark an event, remember the life of a friend, relation or colleague or show your support for the work of the Library.

Rare book collections

The Library has two collections of rare books. The first is on smallpox and vaccination and was collected by Dr Richard J. Reece. On his death, the collection was offered to the School by his widow, on the recommendation of Dr Reece’s colleague Dr Hugh Macewen. The School took collection of the items in October 1925 on payment of £30. The collection was described by the BMJ as “…the most complete library in this country of the old literature of small-pox, variolation and vaccination.”*

The second collection contains items on public health and infectious disease published pre-1900. These were purchased by Library staff on the formation of the Library, or donated to us.
