School first in the world for tropical medicine in new subject rankings

Inaugural Center for World University Rankings by Subject recognise School's performance.

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine features in the top-10 of higher education institutions worldwide in five subject fields, in new results published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

The inaugural CWUR Rankings by Subject highlight the world’s elite universities in the sciences and social sciences, across 227 subject categories. The rankings, which compare subjects from more than 26,000 degree-granting institutions are based on the number of research articles in top-tier, highly influential journals.

The School ranked:

  • first for Tropical Medicine
  • second for Parasitology
  • seventh for Infectious Diseases
  • seventh for Public Environment & Occupational Health
  • seventh for Social Sciences, Biomedical

Overall, the 2017 Rankings by Subject place the School 97th globally among institutions with the most top-10 placements.

The CWUR also publish the most comprehensive annual academic ranking of global universities, listing the top 1,000 universities out of more than 26,000 institutions. In 2016, the School was listed in the top-250 universities, based on eight objective indicators including quality of education and training of students, to alumni employment and prestige of faculty members.

The latest ranking continues the School’s strong performances in a number of global university league tables. In the US News Best Global Universities Ranking 2017, the School ranked sixth in the world (together with Oxford University) in the fields of social sciences and public health, and in the QS World University Rankings 2017 it ranked 25th for medicine. The School was also named University of the Year 2016 at the prestigious Times Higher Education awards, in recognition of its response to the Ebola epidemic, reinforcing our commitment as a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public health.
