London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

The 2018 CWTS Leiden Ranking, published by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies at Leiden University, measures the scientific performance of more than 900 major universities from 55 different countries worldwide. It uses Web of Science data to rank universities based on the number and proportion of their publications that are highly cited.

While LSHTM produces a lower overall number of highly cited publications than its larger counterparts due to its smaller research output, the quality of its research means it has a high proportion of frequently cited papers.

For research papers published between 2013 and 2016, 2.7% were in the top 1% of the most frequently cited publications, placing LSHTM 8th ahead of universities such as Yale (2.6%), Cambridge (2.5%), and Oxford (2.4%). Institutions including Rockefeller (5.2%), MIT (4.1%), Stanford (3.5%), Harvard (3.3%) and Princeton (3.1%) were among the top seven institutions.

The School also ranks ninth in the world and first in the UK for collaborative research, based on the proportion of its publications co-authored with one or more other organisations.

This latest ranking adds to LSHTM’s notable performances in various global university league tables in recent years.

The School ranked sixth in the world in the US News Best Global Universities Ranking 2018 in the fields of social sciences and public health and ranked joint 21st for medicine in the 2018 QS World University Rankings. The School was awarded the prestigious Times Higher Education ‘University of the Year’ 2016 award, in recognition of our response to the Ebola epidemic.
