World Health Organization strategic approaches to sexually transmitted infections prevention and control: a historical perspective

This seminar will outline key milestones, features and recommendations presented by the World Health Organization (WHO) in response to the burden of sexually transmitted infections at the global and national levels historically. The talk will highlight successes and recognised gaps, in both research and interventions. The talk will also look at policies and opportunities which enhance or hinder the global and national responses to sexually transmitted infections (STI) prevention and control. 

 

Speaker

Dr Francis J. Ndowa is based in Zimbabwe as Director and Physician (Specialist Dermato-venereologist) at the Skin & Genito-Urinary Medicine Clinic in Harare. Additionally, he provides international consultancy on surveillance for and the control of sexually transmitted infections and containment of antimicrobial resistance with a particular focus in Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

He is the Regional Director of the Africa and the Middle East & North Africa Branch of the International Union against STIs (IUSTI Africa-MENA), a member of the WHO Sexual and Reproductive Health/Human Reproduction (SRH/HRP) Scientific and Technical Advisory Group and is currently a member of the ReAct Toolbox International Advisory Group on antimicrobial resistance.
