Women & Health and their role in Lebanon’s current political crisis and Intifada

As part of the Women Leaders in Conflict Health Initiative (WLCH) global seminar series, this seminar will discuss two key critical themes in the ongoing protests since 17 October 2019 in Lebanon: Women & Health. It will first describe the nature of the multi-fragmented and highly privatized Lebanese health system and how “Health for all” has become one of the major demands of the protestors including women who are at the frontline of the “Lebanese intifada.”

The second theme will look into the role that Lebanese women are playing in leading the protests in confronting the deeply embedded patriarchal system that includes sexualization of women, harassment, and inequitable civil rights and nationality laws.

Dr. Nassim El Achi is a Research Fellow at R4HC-MENA Conflict and Health Work Stream, working on capacity building of conflict and health research across the MENA region. Though trained in chemical sciences, Nassim joined the University of Oxford for a postgraduate degree in water Science, Policy and Management in 2017. Nassim received three awtards including the second prize for the 'Best PhD in Chemical Sciences' award organized by Société chimique de France (SCF).
