Preventing TB Transmission in South African Clinics – Lessons for COVID-19

The Umoya Omuhle study adopted a whole-system approach to TB infection prevention and control (IPC) in South African primary health care clinics. IPC was considered within the context of the whole health system, whilst mapping and evaluating multiple influences on policymaking and implementation. This new understanding of the system offers new ways to reduce transmission in clinics.

During this seminar, the results of the 12-clinic study will be presented, as well as the proposed package of interventions that developed as a result. Given the similarities between these interventions and those recommended to prevent the spread of COVID-19, any relevant insights useful in preventing transmission in health facilities will also be highlighted, particularly with regards to the challenges in implementing and adhering to IPC, and ways to overcome these.
