Pint of Science 2019

Come along and hear LSHTM researchers talking about their work as part of this year’s Pint of Science! Taking place on the 20th, 21st & 22nd May at The Elgin W9 1NJ.

The NHS: a Blessing or a Curse?

Date: 20 May 2019

Time: 7.30 - 9.30 pm

Venue: The Elgin, 255 Elgin Avenue, London W9 1NJ

The NHS is championed as the pioneer example of a healthcare system which provides services to all. It is intended to provide equitable health for the whole country but is this true in practice? Are our efforts to ‘Save the NHS’ appropriate? Our speakers will show how inequalities in the NHS may suggest that we need to be more creative to achieve equitable health for all. An interesting discussion is bound to follow and Pint of Science prizes can be won! This event will be held on the first floor and there is no step-free access.

Trials and Tribulations

Date: 21 May 2019

Time: 7.30 - 9.30 pm

Venue: The Elgin, 255 Elgin Avenue, London W9 1NJ

How do we find the time for research in emergencies? How do we carry out research when we know a treatment works but we don’t know why? It is not always clear how to design a clinical trial. Our speakers will show how ground-breaking trial design can allow for research in settings previously considered too difficult or unethical. An interesting discussion is bound to follow and Pint of Science prizes can be won! This event will be held on the first floor and there is no step-free access.

It’s only a model … or is it?

Date: 22 May 2019

Time: 7.30 - 9.30 pm

Venue: The Elgin, 255 Elgin Avenue, London W9 1NJ

The world is a messy, complicated place so how do scientists come up with their simple models of reality? What do we do when models conflict with our common sense? Using examples from epidemiology and health economics, our speakers will push the limits of scientific models. An interesting discussion is bound to follow and Pint of Science prizes can be won! This event will be held on the first floor and there is no step-free access.
