Paramyxoviruses, interferon and within host RNA virus persistence

Paramyxoviruses are primarily known for the acute infections and associated diseases they cause, such as mumps, measles and respiratory illnesses. However, under certain conditions they can establish persistent (or prolonged) infections, which can be considered as infections that continue for longer than would be expected from a prototypical acute infection (2 - 3 weeks). Using molecular techniques, including high throughput sequencing, details of their replication cycles, how they interact with the interferon system and the molecular basis by which they establish persistent infections will be described.
