Optimising chemical-mediated transfection of protozoan parasites

Optimising chemical-mediated transfection of protozoan parasites: applications and wider relevance”

Dr Francisco Olmo has been at LSHTM for two years, funded by a GSK-Cofund fellowship to undertake research on Chagas disease drug activity and resistance. A major focus of his work is to optimise techniques that will facilitate functional studies at a genome-wide level in the causative agent, Trypanosoma cruzi.

In this protozoan parasite, transfection efficiency has long been a major stumbling block for studies on gene function.  In his presentation, Dr Olmo will describe a novel chemical-mediated transfection method, which seems to be widely applicable to protozoa. Other potential uses of the technology will be discussed.
