Nothing about us, without us: A new era for engagement and involvement in research

This seminar has been postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Young people are vital for the future of all societies. Ensuring their needs are met and helping them to reach their potential is essential for health and wellbeing right now and in the future. Implementing successful interventions with this audience requires a transformation in the way they’re involved in research – making sure their voice is heard in the decision making process.

Join us for a discussion on the latest innovations and how to overcome barriers in youth engagement and participatory research methodologies.

The keynote of our event will be a 45 minute session on the development and outcomes from the Youth Researchers Academy (YRA). This revolutionary programme was conducted in Zimbabwe to enable young people aged 18-24 to conduct research that will inform development of sexual and reproductive health interventions. Excitingly, two of the young researchers involved will be flying to the UK to present their work!

Following this is a panel discussion with a variety of experts in the field of involvement and engagement:

  • Nambusi Kyegombe (Chair)
  • Urvita Bhatia works for an NGO in India (Sangath), and is also doing a PhD at Oxford. They have recently started some work with young people around:
    • dating violence, and
    • interventions through sports to prevent substance use in young people
  • Jon Eilenberg who is based at the National Children’s Bureau who will be providing a UK perspective and is particularly interested in discussing cross-context challenges experienced in participatory research with/on young people.
  • Constance Mackworth-Young works as a social scientist on projects delivering sexual and reproductive health services for young people, she has an interest in the ethics surrounding the involvement of young people.

Afterwards, we’ll be holding a drinks reception and involvement showcase, so that we can share learnings, best practice, and inspiration from the latest techniques in youth engagement and participatory research methods.
