Improving efficiency in humanitarian response: Using the Dioptra tool for cost-efficiency analysis of nutrition and child protection programmes

Humanitarian actors are motivated to find cost-effective ways to deliver assistance, but a critical gap exists: methods used to estimate value for money (VfM) are not consistent across agencies or programmes. Humanitarians thus have limited comparable data on VfM, and little insight on what a “good” cost-per-output is in different contexts, or what programme models deliver the most for their clients within constrained budgets.

In this webinar, Save the Children and International Rescue Committee (IRC) will share their experiences from cost-efficiency analyses using the Dioptra tool to identify lessons to reach more people with impactful nutrition and child protection programs within limited budgets. Dioptra is a web-based cost analysis tool for everyday programme staff to calculate the full cost per output of individual programme activities using sector-established analysis methodology and metrics. The webinar will cover the following topics:

  • Introduction of the Dioptra tool
  • Results of the cost-efficiency analysis
    • Cost-efficiency of Malnutrition treatment package in Nigeria
    • Cost-efficiency of Psychosocial Support at Child Friendly Spaces in Myanmar
