Ian Harper - Tuberculosis and its control: The case of Nepal

Focusing on Nepal, this talk charts the shifts in WHO policy and approach to tuberculosis control - from DOTS to End TB - and how these policy transformations are dealt with in practice. In particular, it focuses on the question of TB drug distribution networks, new diagnostic technologies and the role of the Global Fund. The lecture will simultaneously ask what are the contributions that an anthropological understanding of TB and its control can offer to this global challenge? It thus highlights also a personal and intellectual journey into anthropology, after an original training in medicine, followed by programmatic and research experience of tuberculosis management in Nepal.
