How to make "resistance-proof" antibiotics?

Luiz Pedro Carvalho, Mycobacterial Metabolism and Antibiotic Research Laboratory, The Francis Crick Institute

While drug resistant tuberculosis cases are decreasing worldwide mortality due to drug resistant tuberculosis is increasing significantly. Several new transformative drugs are required to reverse this trend and control this epidemic. D-cycloserine is the only antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis that has evaded resistance.

D-cycloserine as a model was used to understand which characteristics antibiotics need to have to trick bacteria and mycobacteria and evade selection of resistant strains. It is hoped that the findings will serve many of the ongoing and future antibiotic discovery and development programmes, to prioritize compounds that might evade selection of resistance.
