Please note that this event has now been postponed to Thursday 7 July 2022, 18:00 BST

The LSHTM Health in Humanitarian Crises Centre (HHCC) is pleased to host Dr Esperanza Martinez, a Senior Advisor to the Office of the Director-General of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), to deliver this year’s HHCC Annual Lecture. During this event, Dr Martinez will address the question: “In an era of compounded crises, what is the role of humanitarian action?”

The world is facing an unprecedented number of simultaneous large-scale challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate changearmed conflict, and inequality. The impact of these challenges has been felt globally – but nowhere are the consequences more felt than in countries already impacted by a humanitarian crisis.

As needs in these countries are increasing at a rapid pace, what role can humanitarian action play, and what are the key challenges for humanitarian actors? This lecture provides a multi-disciplinary perspective that encompasses action in the fields of healtheconomic securityprotection, and humanitarian diplomacy.
