The Global Epidemiology and Control of HIV Infection

Richard Hayes and Helen Weiss have been involved in research on the epidemiology and control of HIV for over 20 years. In this talk, they will briefly outline the magnitude and diversity of the global epidemic of HIV, and current approaches to prevention including treatment as prevention.  The session will conclude with a question & answer session with the audience.

Speakers

Richard Hayes is a Professor of Epidemiology and previous Head of the MRC International Statistics and Epidemiology Group.  Richard has been working at the School since 1978, collaborating on research on HIV and related infections in sub-Saharan Africa.  He helped establish and is one of the principal investigators of the long-term collaborative programme of research in Mwanza, Tanzania (MITU).  He is also the Principal Investigator of the HPTN 071/PopART trial, measuring the impact of universal voluntary HIV testing and immediate treatment on population-level HIV incidence in Zambia and South Africa. 

Helen Weiss is a Professor of Epidemiology, Associate Dean for Research for the Faculty of Epidemiology and Population Health, and Director of the MRC International Statistics and Epidemiology Group.  Helen has extensive expertise in the design and analysis of observational and intervention studies on HIV and mental health in sub-Saharan Africa and India.  Her current work focuses on adolescent health, including evaluating strategies improving access to treatment and care for adolescents living with HIV.
