Panel Discussion

Gender Identities & Public Health

What do "transgender" and "non-binary" mean? What gender services are available for transgender people? How can we make our research more gender-inclusive? These questions and more will be explored in this panel discussion centering on inclusion of trans* and non-binary gender identities in the Public Health, Health Research and Health Services sectors.

Denise Anderson of GIRES (Gender Identity Resource and Education Society) will discuss the provision of gender services for trans and non-binary people in England. She will cover a brief history, the current state of affairs and possibilities for the future, including ways forward in light of the Women and Equalities Committee's recent Transgender Equality Inquiry Report.   Dr. Martin Mitchell, Research Director at NatCen Social Research, will share NatCen's work developing and testing questions to measure self-reported gender identity. He will also discuss when and how these questions can be used.   Dr. Francis Ray White, senior lecturer in sociology at the University of Westminster and speaker with Gendered Intelligence, will present an introductory session on gender identities and gender expression, as well as pronoun and language use that is inclusive of varied gender experiences and identities. They will draw from their work on feminist theory, sexuality and LGBTQ studies.    The event will include ample time for questions, answers and discussion.
