Cancer control in low- and middle-income countries: a Nigerian perspective

The LSHTM Cancer Survival Group and Centre for Global Chronic Conditions are pleased to host Her Excellency Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, the First Lady of Kebbi State, to deliver this lunchtime seminar exploring cancer control from a Nigerian perspective.  

During this seminar, Dr Zainab will discuss how Medicaid Radio-diagnostics contributes to better cancer care in Nigeria by making diagnostic equipment easily accessible and affordable. The foundation focuses on awareness, capacity building, access to care and policy advocacy.  

Medicaid Cancer Foundation has helped spread awareness on cancer through community outreach and school advocacy programmes, and it supports cancer patients with access to free screening, treatment support and patient navigation.  

Dr Bagudu has authored a book on the ABCs of cancer to educate the younger generation, and she hosts the biggest annual cancer walk in Nigeria: #Walkawaycancerng has raised over US$2M to assist indigent cancer patients. The Foundation has contributed to the National Cancer Control plan, to the Kebbi State cancer registry strategic plan, and to cancer health funds at National and State level.

Her Excellency Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu is the First Lady of Kebbi State, Nigeria. She is a paediatrician and advocate for cancer control in Nigeria and beyond, as well as CEO of Medicaid Radio-diagnostics and the Medicaid Cancer Foundation. 

Dr Bagudu is a member of WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative. She serves as a board member for the Union of International Cancer Control (UICC) and is currently running for UICC President-elect.
