Dr Eniyou Cheryll Oriero has a background in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She started her career in Agricultural research where she worked on molecular characterisation, genetic transformation and tissue culture of food crops. Eniyou moved to Medical research when she joined the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia in 2007 and has since been involved in several malaria projects, with particular focus on molecular diagnostics, genotyping and epidemiology of malaria parasites. She obtained her PhD at the University of Antwerp, Belgium (2015) and is currently interested in Genomic epidemiology of human non-falciparum malaria parasite species, particularly Plasmodium malariae. Dr Oriero is also coordinating malaria Genomic Surveillance studies, with multiple sites across sub-Saharan Africa.

My PhD research was focussed on developing and evaluating new molecualr diagnostic tools for field detection of malaria parasites. I developed a novel isothermal assay (loop-mediated isothermal amplification - LAMP) that targets the apicoplast genome of Plasmodium species for molecular detection of low density malaria infections. Following on from my PhD, I took particular interest in the neglected human malaria parasite species, particularly P. malariae and I have described it's molecular and serology prevalence in a high malaria transmission setting in southern Nigeria. I am currently intersted in generating genomic and population-wide data on the neglected human malaria parasite species across sub-Saharan Africa.
