I hold degrees in Nutritional Sciences (Licenciatura, University of Porto), Public Health (MSc, University of Porto), and Epidemiology and Population Health (PhD, LSHTM).
I joined the Department of Non-Communicable Disease Epidemiology in 2013. My research has focused on cancer survival and cancer survivorship issues. This includes studies comparing survival from common cancers in different jurisdictions and studies investigating the long-term mental health impact of having had cancer.
Prior to joining LSHTM, I taught Epidemiology at the University of Porto Medical School. I also worked as a Research Fellow at the Public Health Institute, where I looked into the determinants of gastric and oesophageal cancers, and secular trends of risk factors for cardiovascular disease, in Portugal.

I co-organise the ‘Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Diseases’ module for the intensive MSc programmes at LSHTM. I also tutor students of the MSc in Epidemiology, supervise MSc projects of both the in-house and distance learning MSc in Epidemiology programmes, and facilitate practical sessions of ‘Extended Epidemiology’ in the Autumn. I co-supervise a doctoral student investigating respiratory outcomes in cancer survivors.
Research
My research focuses on the use of electronic health records, which are routinely collected in primary care practices and hospitals in the UK, to study whether cancer survivors have different outcomes compared to people who did not have cancer. I am also interested in the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer survivorship, and have been involved in several studies including outcomes in cancer survivors.
