I have worked both as a nurse and in a research environment specialising in cardio thoracics. I have worked at the school since 1997.
I successfully coordiated and completed the RITA trials (Randomised Intervention Treatment of Angina). These multi centre studies compared established treatments for patients with stable and unstable angina. Other work has included STEPS (Strategies for Trial Enrolment and Participation) which reviewed recruitment to Randomised Controlled Trials and OPAL (Older People and long chain polyunsturated fatty acids) which is looking at the role of fish oils in older people, txt2stop which is using mobile phone support as a method of helping people quit smoking through supportive text messages (results out which showed a positive effect). txt2top one numerous awards including Royal College of Physicians paper of the year 2012.
The current work coordinated by our CTU consists of many large multi centre trials. Three of these have looked at the effects of pre conditioning: REPAIR (Renal Protection Againist Ischaemia in Reperfusion), ERICCA (Effect of Remote Ischaemic Preconditioning on clinical outcomes in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery) and ERIC PPCI (Effect of Remote Ischaemic Conditioning on clinical outcomes in ST segment elevation myocardial infarcion patients undergoing PPCI). Recruitment for REPAIR finished April 2013 with long term results due. ERICCA has completed and ERIC PPCI is currently in the recruitment phase. Other trials include heart failure, sexual health, cardiac failure, iron replacement in major surgery, role of potassium following CABG and Marfans. The CTU team continues to expand with further applications under review or awaiting funding decisions.
