Research Student - MPhil/PhD - Infectious & Tropical Diseases

United Kingdom

Dana is a public health microbiologist and doctoral researcher passionate about improving AMR interventions in low-resource settings.

She is supervised by Prof. Kathryn Holt, co-director of LSHTM AMR Centre, Professor Nicholas Thomson, Head of Parasite and Microbes Programme at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, and Dr. Ebenezer Foster-Nyarko, Regional Coordinator for PulseNET Africa and Fellow at the Holt Lab Group. For her Ph.D., Dana is working on understanding the underlying benefits of whole genome sequencing (WGS) in AMR surveillance and working on integrating WGS in National AMR Surveillance Systems with a primary focus on Low- and Low-middle income settings.

Currently, Dana holds several positions with international organisations. In her part-time, Dana coordinates the LSHTM AMR Centre internal and external activities and events. She also consults for the WHO Regional Office Eastern Mediterranean and CRDF Global partner of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

She contributed to several WHO consultations and technical documents for the Global Antimicrobial Resistance and Use Surveillance System (GLASS), including the Application of WGS for AMR surveillance and global harmonisation of External Quality Assessment schemes. In her previous role, as a researcher at the WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Bacterial Pathogens at the American University of Beirut (AUB), she isolated and identified novel antimicrobials from soil and marine organisms.

Dana completed her undergraduate degree in Biological Earth and Life Sciences at the Lebanese University, where she did a Masters in Applied Animal Biology, followed by an MSc in Microbiology and Immunology at AUB. She is a recipient of the Graduate Assistantship Scholarship and Islamic Development Bank Award.
