Dr Covadonga Bascaran
I am a Clincial Research Fellow at the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH) where I have been working for over ten years in Public Health Ophthalmology. I trained as a medical doctor in Spain and have a clinical background in Ophthalmology. I graduated with an MSc in Community Eye Health from LSHTM in 2009 and I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I have ten years' experience as Technical Advisor and Director of Programmes for international NGOs. Through this work I have been involved in the design, implementation and managment of sustainable eye care programmes in Latin America and Africa, and have written grant proposals and obtained grant funding from Spanish goverment agencies.
At ICEH I have worked in a range of education and research activities. Since 2014 I have directed the MSc in Public Health for Eye Care which traines leaders in prevention of blindness worldwide. I have supervised MSc students in research and mentored them towards peer-reviewed publication.
I have been the lead for Public Health Education within the Commonwealth Eye Health Consortium (CEHC), delivering the MSc Felllowships. As part of the CEHC I am also the Technical Consultant for the DR-NET Caribbean Programme, working with Ministries of Health in four countries to establish, scale up and deliver integrated diabetic retinopathy programmes.
I work with the VISION 2020 LINKS Programme, the DR-NET and the Rb-NET, advising on research network strategies and coordinating and conducting research projects.
My main interests are capacity building for prevention of blindness and implementation and policy research in international eye health.
Ouside LSHTM I am a founder and director of the Burkina Health Foundation, a charity working in developing sustainable health programmes in Burkina Faso.
I have been the Programme Director for the MSc in Public Health for Eye Care since 2014 and I am Module organizer for the Non communicable eye diseases Module. I teach on the Skills for Field Projects Module and on Principles of Global Eye Health Module.
I supervise a number of MSc student dissertations every year and I am currently co-supervising a PhD student.
I am a member of the MSc Ethics Commitee at LSHTM and External Examiner for the MPH in CEH at the University of Cape Town.
