Profile: Elizabeth Williamson

Elizabeth Williamson from the UK studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health

"After studying as an undergraduate in mathematics at the University of Cambridge, I took an MSc Medical Statistics at the University of Leicester. I found statistical epidemiology a challenging and interesting subject, and so decided to pursue it at the LSHTM: an institution with an excellent international reputation in this field.

Studying at the LSHTM has provided me with a variety of opportunities. I am involved in assisting in a variety of practical teaching sessions. There is no surer way of learning a subject inside out than the knowledge that you will be preaching it to a group of students. An excellent programme of talks by statisticians working in various areas has greatly increased my knowledge of the subject. Presenting my work at conferences, although extremely daunting at first, was a fantastic experience and has given me contacts with statisticians all over the world.

Studying a subject that you love would be good anywhere, but the LSHTM is a particularly friendly and supportive environment to study where students are really encouraged to reach their potential. If a friend of mine was considering applying for a PhD, I would have no hesitation in recommending the LSHTM."

Dulce Baptista, Laura Oakley, Julius Wandabwa, Pura Rayco-Solon and Joann McDermid are also studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health
