Profile: Julius Wandabwa
Julius Wandabwa from Uganda studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health
"I graduated from Makerere Medical School and specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Because of the challenging experiences in managing a labour ward, I became interested in women who narrowly survived death during child birth or “near miss”. With the increasing HIV/AIDS prevalence in Uganda the numbers of such women seemed to increase, so I had the idea of updating my research skills in order to explore broader issues of what predisposed pregnant women to "near miss".
When I obtained a Commonwealth Scholarship, I felt I should join LSHTM because I had read a lot on maternal health, by staff of LSHTM. My studies at LSHTM have given me an ideal opportunity to integrate my clinical obstetric experience with epidemiological research methods, and a unique opportunity for teaching and undertaking research in a developing country.
I commend the staff of LSHTM who are always willing to assist students. The multicultural nature of the student population has made it easier to make life long contacts. I look forward to working in collaboration with LSHTM in future and strongly recommend the prestigious LSHTM as a place to study."
Dulce Baptista, Laura Oakley, Elizabeth Williamson, Pura Rayco-Solon and Joann McDermid are also studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health
