Profile: Jolene Skordis

Jolene Skordis from South Africa studying for a PhD in the Department of Public Health & Policy

"When considering where to undertake my PhD in Health Economics, I needed to identify an institution that would have world-class economists working alongside world-class medical professionals. That institution also needed to work on problems relevant to developing countries, particularly those in sub-Saharan Africa. The LSHTM wasn’t just the obvious choice – it was the only choice! Being based in London also made it that much easier to convince my partner to move with me from South Africa to the other side of the world.

I have been at the LSHTM for a little over a year now and continue to be impressed by the range and standard of work produced. Despite their high standing, researchers in the School always seem ready to assist research degree students. This means that, aside from the excellent supervision I receive, I have also benefited from a wider pool of experience. All of this exposure is proving to be very valuable to my evolving thesis in this multidisciplinary field."

Pa-Lamin Beyai and Meenakshi Gautham are also studying for a PhD in the Department of Public Health & Policy
