Profile: Sarah Caldwell

Sarah Caldwell from Canada is studying for a DrPH in the Department of Public Health & Policy

"When I began thinking about returning to school to pursue a research degree, the LSHTM was repeatedly recommended to me by colleagues and alumni. As I explored different programmes in Canada, the USA and the UK, the DrPH programme quickly became the frontrunner with its combined focus on academic excellence and applied policy research. From the first days, I have not been disappointed. The School and my Supervisor are committed to fostering a challenging and supportive environment where I can develop and debate my ideas whilst also exploring their practical application.

My research interests have their origins in the position I currently hold in the Strategy Division of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Though I am currently on educational leave, I intend to return to the public service and hope that I will be able to bring back insights into the knowledge-practice gap as it relates to the use of research and evidence in decision making. I am particularly interested in the history and comparative practice of evidence-informed decision making in health policy, and intend to use a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates political science theories of public policy, sociological theories of knowledge and organisational behaviour, and management and decision-making theory."
