Profile: Pura Rayco-Solon

Pura Rayco-Solon from the Philippines studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health

"After obtaining a Medical degree at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine, I trained in Paediatrics at the Philippine General Hospital, and feel I have gained some small measure of understanding regarding the health problems of the Philippines. Realizing that one of the first and most important steps in addressing these problems is a good foundation in research, I joined the LSHTM in 1999 as an MSc student and am now pursuing a PhD degree while being based at the MRC in The Gambia.

I feel that studying in an institution with an excellent international reputation, like the LSHTM, would not only give me the theoretical grounding that I need but also extensive practical experience in the field. I have gained insight and perspective from meeting students, teachers, health care workers and doctors from different backgrounds and a wide range of experiences. A research degree will consolidate my previous learning and help me meet challenges that are inherent in tropical medicine."

Dulce Baptista, Laura Oakley, Elizabeth Williamson, Julius Wandabwa and Joann McDermid are also studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health
