Profile: Caroline Ochieng
Caroline Ochieng from Kenya is studying for a PhD in the Department of Public Health & Policy
"Prior to coming to LSHTM I was a Tutorial Fellow in the Department of Public Health in Kenyatta University, where I had done my BSc in Environmental Science and MSc in Public Health.
I joined LSHTM in September 2008 as a PhD student and also a Graduate Teaching Assistant.
My research is on interventions aimed at reducing indoor air pollution from biomass fuels use, which is a major risk factor for disease in Kenya and other developing countries. At the time of joining LSHTM I had only a rough idea of what I wanted to investigate. Through excellent guidance and supervision I was able to refine and fully develop the idea into a proposal and to execute it in Kenya. The opportunity of receiving training here and applying the knowledge to carry out a project for the benefit of my home country is something I have greatly appreciated.
My research work integrates both quantitative and qualitative aspects. This would have been very challenging had it not been for the multidisciplinary staff here, who are offering me great support in the various aspects.
The fact that LSHTM is internationally recognised has also enabled me to form great linkages with people working on my research area from various parts of the world, which are proving to be very useful. I am happy with my experience in LSHTM thus far."
Sarah Caldwell and Tazio Vanni are also studying for a PhD in the Department of Public Health & Policy
