Profile: Melanie Morris

Melanie Morris from the UK studied the MSc Epidemiology

"After having children I realised I didn’t want to go back to the teaching I had been doing. I wanted more rigour, challenge, stimulation and team work. I have found all these things in the MSc Epidemiology. I am so glad to be back doing science and the range of topics that I have had to come to grips with has really stretched me.

I am a part-time student, but, unusually for part-timers on this course, I don’t do paid work in the other half of my week – I am with my 3 and 5 year olds. The course has allowed me to combine studying with being with my boys. There has been a fair amount of ‘homework’, but even the tight end-of-unit assessment deadlines have been manageable. In fact, the assessments are always handed in before holidays so our breaks are really free.

It has been wonderful meeting people from such a wide range of backgrounds and from so many countries. Everyone has a distinct experience to share, with all the skills that has given them. Before I started, I worried about what I had to offer others in terms of my experiences. The reality has been that I have always felt an equal member of every discussion group, precisely because there are so many different viewpoints being expressed. My experiences as a teacher and a mother have both been valuable."

Koshy Eapen and Philip la Fleur also studied the MSc Epidemiology
