Profile: Joann McDermid
Joann McDermid from Canada studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health
"Having originally trained as a clinical dietician, I subsequently completed postgraduate degrees in Dietetics & Human Nutrition and in Epidemiology & Biostatistics at McGill University, Montreal. It was during my postgraduate research that my interest in HIV/AIDS began. After acquiring important practical experience as a Research Associate for the Immunodeficiency Service, Royal Victoria Hospital, I realised that I had a strong desire to continue and advance my research training. Given the multidisciplinary nature of my research interests, I began to look for universities with a proven record of successful multidisciplinary research. I am confident I could not have chosen a better place than the School. the School is truly unique in the encouraging attitude that exists towards undertaking research that spans many scientific disciplines - from basic laboratory science to population-based research. Importantly, the active participation in such collaborative networks extends beyond School borders to include UK-wide and multinational groups making the research possibilities essentially limitless."
Dulce Baptista, Laura Oakley, Elizabeth Williamson, Julius Wandabwa and Pura Rayco-Solon are also studying for a PhD in the Department of Epidemiology & Population Health
