Profile: Jocelyn Hawkins

Jocelyn Hawkins from the UK studied the MSc Reproductive & Sexual Health Research

"Even though I enjoy working, I knew I wanted to continue education. Through the support of my employers, I was able to begin my MSc as a part-time student. I was slightly anxious about the course and how it was organised for part-time students, but a phone call later, the Course Organiser alleviated all my concerns.

I was extremely surprised at just how multicultural the School is and am delighted by how much I have learned from being in such an environment. Student interaction is encouraged by stimulating debates and a wealth of information can easily be gained through the exchange of experience. The course has been thoroughly enjoyable. I was worried that coming from a social sciences background, I would have difficulty dealing with scientific terms, but I soon realised this posed no problem. The course has been designed with people of all backgrounds in mind and I have never once felt out of my depth.

Juggling work and study has been tough but manageable. I feel that being a part-time student has been the right choice – the workload can often be heavy so being able to work the other half of my time is a welcome contrast. I was very excited to start the course and now that I am finishing my first year, that same excitement has remained.

I look forward to meeting more people who I'm sure will appreciate the high level of expertise and knowledge at the LSHTM. This is a great learning environment. As a former student said: "Do all you can to get here." – I couldn't agree with her more."

Soha Patel and Francesca Woodburn also studied the MSc Reproductive & Sexual Health Research
