Profile: Elizabeth Horn-Phathanothai
Elizabeth Horn-Phathanothai from Australia studied MSc Public Health (Health Promotion) by distance learning.
"I loved my work in health and development in China but knew it would be enhanced by pursuing further studies in public health.
I chose the distance course at the LSHTM for several reasons. First, I wanted to explore topics that interested me with leading academics. Second, I was seeking a world class education. Third, I wanted the flexibility to combine further studies with my work as the director of a children’s health and education project.
I found all these things in my distance education MSc, so the experience was hugely worthwhile for me. I was fortunate to be elected student representative for both years, which gave me extra opportunities to meet and interact with the course committee.
Remote studying can also be quite challenging. Staying motivated whilst being separated from peers and academic staff was not easy. IT solutions – such as webcasts and skype – can help overcome this isolation and these will undoubtedly develop with time.
This MSc helped prepare me for my current job in UNICEF headquarters, and the experience is much richer as a result."
