Profile: Anna Maria Bedford
Anna Maria Bedford from Italy studying for the MSc Public Health Nutrition on a half-time basis
"After obtaining my PhD in Italy with a thesis in toxicology, I spent several years working in cancer research in different countries. With the birth of my second child I opted for a career break, and spent the last ten years raising a family, carrying out voluntary work and doing some scientific writing in the field of diet and cancer. It was at this point that, whilst becoming deeply convinced about the important role of diet in cancer aetiology, I realised how little I knew about nutrition itself. The MSc Public Health Nutrition seemed to be the obvious answer to my problem. The course is very comprehensive and has equipped me with the basic knowledge of nutritional facts and the ability to critically appraise nutrition policies and interventions.
It has also given me a broader view of the nutrition situation worldwide, including developing countries. In summary, it has been a very successful year, thanks to the efficient organisation and continuous support from all the members of staff and my own family. Even my greatest fear of being a 'mature student' was quickly dissipated by the end of the first week and I thoroughly appreciated the company of all the other students with their different experiences and backgrounds."
