Profile: Clarence Afum-Gyeke
Clarence Afum-Gyeke from Ghana studied the MSc Immunology of Infectious Diseases
"I worked at the Haematology department as a Medical Laboratory Technician for five years. After graduating with a BSc from the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences, Havana-Cuba I worked as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Haematology/Blood Transfusion Science before returning to Ghana as Laboratory Manager at the Paediatric department. In 1999, I took charge of the new Surgical/Medical Emergency laboratory as well as teaching diploma students at the School of Medical Laboratory Technology, Korle-bu.
Despite the burden of my new responsibilities I began planning for my MSc at the School. I had to defer my admission three times from 1997-99 because of lack of sponsorship. But in 2000, I received an award from the British Council to study at the School. Through the dedication of the teachers and others this course has really given me an understanding of disease processes and control measures. It is my hope to pursue research by undertaking a PhD within one of the malaria programmes.
If you understand the meaning of family then you are in the right place at the School. Here, you are offered the best in academic research all under the umbrella of a perfect social atmosphere."
