Profile: Tamer Abdelaziz-Rabie

Tamer Abdelaziz-Rabie from Egypt studying for a PhD in the Department of Infectious & Tropical Diseases

"Having worked in the Health Sector Reform Program at the Ministry of Health & Population, Egypt, I became convinced that to formulate sound policies, policy makers require a strong foundation that pivots on evidence-based medicine. From this perspective, I came to appreciate the importance of attaining a postgraduate degree in public health to arm myself with cutting edge knowledge and skills.

I chose the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) because of its international reputation as a leading public health school.

Following the completion of a maters program in Public Health in Developing countries (PHDC), I applied for a PhD programme without any second thoughts. My research focus is on the epidemiology and control of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in children. My PhD fieldwork will involve a nested case-control study to quantitatively assess different risk factors for ARIs.

Being at LSHTM has exposed me to many disciplines that have added greatly to the sum of my knowledge. Among many other things, I have learnt how to critically appraise public health programmes and how to design disease control programmes in developing countries. Studying at LSHTM has been challenging but very exciting indeed. It has given me a fine blend of skills and expertise to effectively contribute to the public health world both in research and management."

Kristof Bostoen is also studying for a PhD in the Department of Infectious & Tropical Diseases
