SECTION 2 - Course Descriptions
MSc PUBLIC HEALTH NUTRITION
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course students should be able to:
- demonstrate advanced knowledge of human nutrition in terms of food, diet and health, at biological, social and policy levels;
- assess critically, select and apply a range of appropriate research skills and techniques, from anthropometry and information on dietary intake to broader analytical skills, including statistics, epidemiology, qualitative research methods, computing and information retrieval;
- interpret and synthesise different types of data used to analyse and assess nutritional problems at both population and population sub-group levels;
- evaluate critically the findings of scientific studies of public health nutrition;
- disseminate and present findings of research in a range of formats and contexts;
- identify and formulate appropriate responses and intervention strategies to address nutritional issues, taking into account the public health and social policy contexts; and
- apply knowledge of effective teamworking and communication skills to solve problems and achieve specific goals.
Term 1: Students take five compulsory modules. Some peripheral optional modules are available but these may only be selected after discussion with the Course Director.
Compulsory modules: Fundamental Public Health Nutrition (equivalent to 3 modules); Basic Epidemiology; Statistics for EPH.
Optional modules (recommended): Global Health Lecture Series
Optional modules (peripheral): Health Policy, Process and Power; Health Promotion Theory; Introduction to Computing; Principles of Social Research.
Term 2: Students choose one module from each timetable slot.
C1: Maternal and Child Nutrition (compulsory)
C2: Design and Analysis of Epidemiological Studies (recommended); Family Planning Programmes; Qualitative Methodologies; Statistical Methods in Epidemiology
D1: Current Issues in Safe Motherhood & Perinatal Health; Epidemiology of Non-Communicable Diseases; History & Health; Nutrition in Emergencies; Sociological Approaches to Health; Tropical Environmental Health.
D2: Nutrition Related Chronic Disease (compulsory)
Term 3: Students choose one module.
E: Advanced Statistical Methods in Epidemiology; Analysing Survey & Population Data; Applying Public Health Principles in Developing Countries; Nutrition Programme Planning; Principles and Practice of Public Health.
