Notes on eligibility and admissions
MSc Medical Statistics
To be eligible for the course you normally would be expected to have a good first degree (equivalent of a 2:1 or first from a British university) in an appropriate subject area, mathematical, statistical, scientific or medical; but applicants with good degrees in other areas are acceptable provided they can demonstrate sufficient mathematical skills, or a credible undertaking to acquire these by the start of the course. Applicants with the equivalent of a 2:2 are occasionally admitted taking into account their interview and experience.
The most important mathematical skills required are: a good working grasp of elementary calculus, some familiarity with matrix algebra and good working basic algebra, including logs and exponents; and although there is an elementary probability course at the start of our first term, it would certainly help to have some familiarity with elementary probability theory (including conditional probability).
As part of the application process you'll be asked to attend an interview (skype or phone for overseas applicants), but if you have easy access to London, we're happy for you to come and chat about the course informally before you start the application process (email mscmedstats@lshtm.ac.uk).
In the last couple of years admissions have peaked between January and March for autumn entry: since we can only accept around 25 students, your chance of acceptance, other things being equal, will be improved if you apply early.
