INTRODUCTION TO STATA AND SAS (2031)

AIM
To introduce students to the statistical packages Stata and SAS.


OBJECTIVES
By the end of this module students should be:

  1. familiar with the working environments of Stata and SAS for Windows;
  2. able to create, manage and manipulate data/datasets using either Stata or SAS;
  3. able to describe and summarise data of various formats in tables and figures;
  4. familiar with using Stata and SAS on-line help facilities to solve problems;
  5. able to write simple programs;
  6. able to carry out simple analyses and have an understanding of the potential of Stata and SAS.


CONSTITUENCY
This module is compulsory for the MSc course in Medical Statistics although students with relevant experience may choose not to attend particular sessions.


CONCEPTUAL OUTLINE
This module can be considered in two broad sections:-

1.     An introduction to the statistical package Stata.
2.     An introduction to the statistical package SAS.


TEACHING STRATEGY
Each session will consist of a short presentation followed by supervised computer work. The computer work will involve material that the students can work through at their own pace during each session followed by exercises.


LEARNING TIME
The module is made up of 100 Notional Learning Hours – 25 hours contact time, 40 hours directed self-study, 15 hours self-directed learning, and 20 hours assessment, review and revision.


ASSESSMENT
Assessed via Term 1 practical assignments and others where use of STATA and/or SAS is required.
