NON COMMUNICABLE EYE DISEASE (3404)

AIM
To know and evaluate the alternative control strategies for non-communicable adult causes of blindness/visual loss, with emphasis on the students own work situation.


OBJECTIVES
By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. describe the risk factors and management of cataract;
  2. know how to interpret indicators used for evaluating cataract services (output; outcome; and outlay);
  3. develop a control strategy for the elimination of cataract blindness appropriate to the student’s place of work;
  4. describe the risk factors and pathophysiology of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration (ARMD);
  5. assess evidence from systematic reviews and trials on the management of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and ARMD;
  6. discuss the role of screening programmes in preventing blindness;
  7. discuss the magnitude and challenge of blindness from ocular injuries;
  8. understand the magnitude of refractive errors and critically evaluate  the control strategies to manage and implement appropriate services;
  9. describe the implementation of low vision services


CONSTITUENCY
This module is compulsory for all MSc Community Eye Health students.


CONCEPTUAL OUTLINE
This study module will focus on control strategies to reduce visual loss and blindness from non-communicable diseases in adults, with emphasis on cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy.


TEACHING STRATEGY
A combination of interactive seminars, group work and student presentations will be used.


LEARNING TIME
The module is made up of 150 Notional Learning Hours – 72.5 hours contact time, 15 hours directed self-study, 25 hours self-directed learning, and 37.5 hours assessment, review and revision.


ASSESSMENT
Students will write an essay on how to implement and monitor a service for cataract, or other non-communicable adult eye disease.

FEE

£1,600 including access to LSHTM library and learning resources, study materials and assessment.
