SKILLS FOR FIELD PROJECTS IN EYE CARE (3401)

AIM
To introduce students to the scope of field research for eye diseases, and the range of skills required to undertake rigorous, scientifically sound, ethical research.


OBJECTIVES
By the end of the module students should be able to:

  1. know how to design studies relevant to eye care that are ethically sound;
  2. formulate good research questions, and know which study design is the most appropriate to address the question;
  3. anticipate some of the difficulties in conducting high quality field research, and know how to avoid or manage them;
  4. make a data recording form;
  5. create a simple database, enter and clean data, and undertaken simple analyses.


CONSTITUENCY
This module is compulsory for all MSc Public Health for Eye Care students, and is offered as an optional module for students from other Masters programmes.


CONCEPTUAL OUTLINE
This module explores the practical aspects of running ophthalmic research in the field. The emphasis will be on quantitative studies, but other types of research will also be covered in outline. Ethical considerations that underpin all research are included.


TEACHING STRATEGY
A combination of interactive seminars, group work and student presentations will be used.


LEARNING TIME
The module is made up of 100 Notional Learning Hours – 30 hours contact time, 20 hours directed self-study, 20 hours self-directed learning, and 30 hours assessment, review and revision.


ASSESSMENT
Coursework - students will design a data recording form.
