EPIDEMIOLOGY OF BLINDING EYE DISEASES (3400)

AIM
To apply the principles of epidemiology to a knowledge and understanding of the magnitude and causes of blindness and visual loss in different socio-economic settings.


OBJECTIVES
By the end of this module the student should be able to:

  1. describe the magnitude and causes of visual loss and blindness in different socio-economic settings;
  2. know the aetiology and risk factors for the major blinding diseases;
  3. be able to plan and analyse data for a basic community assessment of a common eye disease.


CONSTITUENCY
This module is a compulsory module for all MSc Public Health for Eye Care students.


CONCEPTUAL OUTLINE
This module will explore the principles of epidemiology as applied to the major causes of blindness.  It will also form an introduction for modules on control of eye diseases in term 2.


TEACHING STRATEGY
A combination of interactive seminars, group work, discussion and student presentations will be used.


LEARNING TIME
The module is made up of 100 Notional Learning Hours – 30 hours contact time, 20 hours directed self-study, 10 hours self-directed learning, and 40 hours assessment, review and revision.


ASSESSMENT
In order to assess progress, formative assessments will take place during the module in which students will critically review three published papers of epidemiological studies of common eye diseases using structured short answer questions.  Formal assessment will be by written examination in June.
